Are you unsure? Most people don’t know a lot about modern mining. The miners of the past may be your only exposure.  Let’s talk about it. Keep reading to learn about the pros and cons of working in the mining industry.

Pros of Working in the Mining Industry

Mining isn’t like it is on television. There are plenty of great benefits to being a miner. First, there’s a ton of room for career growth as a miner. You might start with doing the more labor-intensive work, but once you’ve shown that you’re a hard worker you may move to other areas of the job.  You can also work almost anywhere. Qualified miners are in short supply. If you’re good enough, you may be flown out to the job, or your housing relocation may be paid for if the company wants you around.  You’ll also benefit from the great accommodations that miners get. FIFO mining accommodation includes plenty of amenities like gyms, transportation, pools, and meals cooked for you. You don’t have to worry about any of your home tasks because they’re all going to be taken care of. The best part of mining, in our experience, is that you don’t take work home with you. You get to spend a long time with your family after a long work period and you don’t have to focus on the mine until you get back to it.

Cons of Working in the Mining Industry

The mining industry isn’t perfect. For one, you’ll be spending a lot of time away from your family. While it’s balanced with family time, those long periods away can be harmful to relationships and you may miss important childhood milestones.  You’re also going to be subject to harsh weather conditions and the isolation of remote mining locations. You may encounter dangerous bugs or animals, extreme heat or cold, and other unpleasant conditions. Mining is still dangerous, even now.  You’ll also have to work long shifts. It’s not uncommon to work a full twelve hours in the mines, and not everyone can adjust to that kind of schedule. You might miss all of the daylight hours or have to work through the night. Overall, while there are many benefits to a career in the mining industry, it’s important to weigh them against the possible downfalls.
